Overview
Tugu Yogyakarta, also known as Tugu Pal Putih, is an iconic landmark and symbol of Yogyakarta. Built in the 18th century by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, it originally represented unity between the king, the people, and God. After being damaged in an earthquake, it was restored by the Dutch, and today, its distinctive form marks the intersection of Yogyakarta’s main thoroughfares. Known as a favorite photo spot, Tugu also holds cultural significance as part of the city’s sacred axis connecting Mount Merapi, the Keraton, and the South Sea.
